Inspired Recruitment: Hiring On Potential, Not Just Experience

When it comes to recruitment, it’s tempting to look for a CV that ticks every box. But if experience is your only focus, you could be missing out on the best candidate for the role.

Experience matters but it’s not the whole picture

Someone’s work history tells you what they’ve done. But it doesn’t tell you how they work, how they learn, or how they’ll show up in your team. That’s where potential comes in.

Hiring someone with a great potential means bringing in someone who’s willing to learn, open to feedback, and motivated to grow. They might not have done the exact job before, but they’ll likely quickly figure it out!

So, what should you looks for instead of ‘X years of experience’?

·        Willingness to learn

·        Positive approach to problem-solving

·        Alignment with your company values

·        Adaptability and curiosity

·        Strong communication and teamwork

These traits often matter more in the long run than whether someone’s held the exact job title you’re hiring for.

But won’t training take longer?

Not necessarily. A motivated new starter with the right support can pick up role-specific skills quickly. And let’s be honest, hiring someone with all the ‘right’ experience doesn’t always guarantee a long-term fit.

So, if you're struggling to fill a role, it might be time to rethink what you're asking for.
